Dr. Melanie Ortega
Dr. Melanie Ortega (Dr. O) had a childhood beagle named Poochie and they had an unforgettable bond. When Poochie passed away, Dr. O wished she could have saved her and knew, at the age of seven, that she was going to become a veterinarian.
Dr. O went to Florida International University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences. Shortly after graduating, she pursued work in various small animal practices to gain hands-on experience. She also worked closely with her mentor in gaining equine experience and developed a true love for practicing medicine on horses. She then completed veterinary school at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. Coming from a Latino background of Cuban and Puerto Rican descent, she is a first-generation college graduate and doctor in her family. She knew right away that she wanted to expand her medical services to not only our fellow dogs and cat pets but also horses.
On her free time, she loves to spend time with her dog Sylvie and her cat Henry. Dr. O likes to work on her truck which enables her to go out and practice medicine on horses. She also spends time with her boyfriend on the boat, going to the beach, and spending time with their families. Dr. O also dedicates her time to exercising because she believes if you take care of your health and exercise first, you can pass on the same care to your pets and show up for them 100%.
